Here is a quote from the Times review of Vampire Weekend’s Contra:
‘“Clever” is an accusation frequently lobbed at Koenig in a manner that suggests an Ivy League-educated frontman couldn’t possibly mean it the way, say, Liam Gallagher does.’
This annoys me. I hate the way that a lot of people seem to associate what is ‘genuine’ in music and lyrical writing with having for some reason to be uneducated or underprivileged. As if somehow if you went to a decent school or come from a wealthy background, you could be taught to write poignantly, so if you didn’t then it is surely more genuine. It’s a good thing that he’s American because if they were English and rich/educated they wouldn’t stand a chance. Can’t people just objectively draw between what is good and what is shit and leave it at that. I’m not calling Ezra Koenig a genius or anything, just making a point. Although I do think Liam Gallagher is a bit shit.
